Happy September

Hello everyone,

Happy September :). Can't believe that the Autumn is here already, I love this time of year but also will be sad to say goodbye to summer.

As I went to write this post I checked when I last blogged and realised I haven't blogged since April ....eek! I have been super busy lately so the months have passed by but hope to get back into blogging again this Autumn so watch this space :) !!

Thank you for your continued support over on my other social media pages and of course everyone who has purchased from me lately. I had a really busy August in terms of sales, views and custom orders so thank you all so much.

Rain Showers, Pretty Flowers

Hello everyone,

Happy April! Today I was featured in this beautiful collection by Jennifer from Happy Scatter called "Rain Showers, Pretty Flowers". I love the collection as blue is my favourite colour and this reminds me of the weather we have been having recently!! The treasury was inspired by clouds, april showers, and the lovely flowers that are appearing everywhere. Dorset Etsy Team Christmas Fair - #DorsetTeam

Sorry to be mentioning CHRISTMAS so early on in the year but exciting news for anyone in Dorset....the Dorset Etsy Team will be returning to Wimborne for their Christmas Fair on Saturday 3rd December at the Wimborne Allendale Centre.

Applications for stallholders are currently OPEN but close on the 1st April.

If you have an Etsy shop and would like to apply to be a seller at the event please find the application form here. The event will feature 70 Dorset Team Etsy sellers under 1 roof!

List of Etsy teams in the UK including local teams, themed teams and UK wide teams

Hello everyone!

Today I thought I would tell you all a little bit about Etsy Teams as well as share my list of Etsy Teams in the U.K. I realise from using Twitter and being part of some sellers groups that often people don't know about Etsy Teams or if one exists in their area so I have decided to put together this list of Etsy Teams across the U.K.

I hope that you will find it useful!

What is an Etsy Team?

Etsy Teams are a feature within Etsy where members can start up community groups or join an existing community group.

Each team has their own link and team forum. The team forum is used in different ways by different teams but often are used as a place to socialise, gain advice and support in running your Etsy shop and connect with other sellers.

Teams can be on any theme. For example you could have "Cat Lovers Team" or "Vintage Sellers UK Team" as well as global, national or local Etsy teams.

Who runs Etsy Teams?

Teams are not run by Etsy but instead are run by sellers themselves who volunteer for the role.

Each team will have one captain and this captain might also assign leaders to help them run the team or have volunteers take on different roles within the team.

Why join a Local Etsy Team?

Local Etsy Teams can be really helpful for gaining advice and support from those living locally. There are often issues that affect you which might not be the case nationwide or worldwide or local advice you can gain from using the team forum (for example the best craft shops to go to or the best places to get something printed locally).

Teams often work together on promotional opportunities so is a great way to get the word out about your shop to a local market.

In addition, many teams also put on local meet ups, events, craft parties and selling events so joining a team can be really social and a way to meet other members.

I would really recommend searching out your local Etsy teams and joining the community. You never know, you might sudden discover that your next door neighbour is also an Etsy seller!

Why join a themed team, a broader UK team, international/ global team?

Themed teams are perfect for connecting with members/ sellers who have a common interest with you. If you are looking for advice, support and to network with others in the same field as you this is a great way to do so. Some teams are themed on things like product time (for example, there is a UK photo team) and others bring together people who are interested in the same things but may not be at all shop related (for example, the UK Home Edders team is for those who home educate).

UK teams, international teams and global teams are also great to join. Many run social media campaigns, have really active online forums and ways to get involved. There are a huge amount of teams globally so I couldn't even start to list them all (!!) but you can search here to find ones which might appeal to you https://www.etsy.com/uk/teams

What should you look for in a team?

There are so many teams to choose from it can be difficult to know which ones to join. I would suggest looking for a few teams which really interest you and you would like to get involved with rather than joining lots and lots of teams.

Bigger isn't always better (!). Look for the teams which are really active, where members seem really engaged and excited to be part of the community.

5 things about Nighthawks by Edward Hopper

Nighthawks, Edward Hopper, 1942, Oil on Canvas, Art Institute of Chicago

#1 The work was finished in 1942 and was sold to the Art Institute of Chicago for $3,000 and has remained in the collection ever since. The work was sold after Hopper and his wife, Josephine attended the opening of an exhibition at the Art Institute. They spoke with the director of the Museum of Modern art who was fond of another of Hopper's paintings and Jo urged him to go to Rehn's gallery (where Nighthawks was being displayed for sale) to see the painting. Subsequently it was purchased by Daniel Catton Rich, the director of the Art Institute of Chicago who was in attendance that evening and went to see the painting at Rehn's.

#2 Nighthawks influenced the look of the film Blade Runner. The director Ridley Scott repeatedly showed the painting to his team stating that he wanted to capture the same kind of look for the film.

#3 - Although invented at an earlier date, the late 1930's - early 1940's saw the commercialisation of the fluorescent light. In 1938 four different size tubes were put onto the market and these new lights were advertised at exhibitions including the New York World's Fair and the Golden Gate International Exposition held in San Francisco. The fluorescent light is what gives the diner the bright, eerie glow that contrasts so starkly with the dark of the street corner.

#4 Edward Hopper's wife, Josephine, kept a journal which Edward would sketch in and add technical information to the pairings and then his wife Josephine would then add additional information to the painting about the painting's theme. This gives us an insight into Hopper's intentions for the pairing.

#5 The work has been parodied many time including in on the Simpsons, Tintin and Peanuts.

Beautiful time lapse of Dorset Coastline

Hello everyone,

Happy Monday :)

Today I wanted to share with you all this amazing video by Mattia Bicchi Photography. The video shows a time lapse of some of the most beautiful places in Dorset (the place that I am lucky to be able to call home!)

I know that I have quite a lot of readers from outside of the U.K *waves* (particularly from the U.S.A and Russia) so I thought it would be fun to show you a little glimpse of what Dorset is like.

Lulworth Cove is just a short drive away and has the most amazing little tea shops all the way down to the beach where you can buy cream teas and have a bite to eat. The beach itself is rugged which I love. Just along from Lulworth Cove is Durdle Door (the archway you see in the video) and from here you have the most spectacular views across the landscape before carefully climbing down the coastal path to the beach. In the summertime the beaches are a really relaxing place to come and enjoy the sunshine but my favourite time to visit the coast has to be in the Autumn and Winter where there is a chill in the air and the waves high and the beaches quiet. It is stunning. A few years across I waited at Durdle Door on the cliff edge for the sun to rise and took photographs. Such a beautiful and magical experience.

Feel so lucky to have this on my door step!

Hello September

Hello everyone,

Can you believe it is September already!? Where did the summer go? I am hoping for some lovely sunny September evenings as lots of August did seem to feel like a bit of a wash out. I really love this time of year as there is a good mix between sunny days and colder autumnal days.

I have sadly lost my lovely bobble hat that I bought last year and was rather in love with so I am on the hunt for a new one. If anyone knows where I can get a lovely warm bobble hat please let me know in the comments section below.

I always feel quite motivated in September. I think it must be years of September being about going back to school that September always feels a bit like the beginning of something so this month I am hoping to get lots achieved particularly with getting my shop prepared for Christmas (eek I know I said Christmas ALREADY!). I also hope to reach 6000 Twitter followers this month. It would be an amazing milestone especially as Twitter is one of my favourite platforms to use. I am currently on 5958 followers so not far off. I would like to get more active on my Instagram page and my Facebook page. I only recently relaunched my Facebook page (a few months ago) so am still trying to get used to posting to it but have really enjoyed being back on Facebook and the interactions I have been receiving. I hope to make lots of new stock for the shop and finally I also hope to keep blogging much more regularly. I do love writing on here and recently have started chatting to other bloggers which is exciting and reading their blogs really makes me want to work more on my own blog!

What to take to a craft fair/ craft show- Packing List

Hello everyone,

There are lots of amazing craft fairs, vintage shows and art exhibitions happening at the moment so I thought for today's 'shop tips' I would put together a packing list of useful things to take for a fair. I hope this is useful and will help you to prepare for the fair.

Stall basics and set up

Table (if required, you might want to check with the venue)
Chairs (if required)
Table cloth (long enough to cover under the table so you can place extra stock and your storage boxes there)
DIY equipment if you are putting up your stand (hammer, nails etc)
Sack truck to transport your boxes to your stall
Stock boxes (clearly labeled)
Photograph of your practice set up before the fair so you can remember where everything goes and set up quickly
Lighting (Plug in lighting if you are by a plug point or battery operated fairy lights)

About you

Business cards / flyers
Artist portfolio with photographs
CV
Stickers with branding
Photographs of your other work
Where the public can find you on social media
Your brand/ shop name clearly displayed

What to wear

Layers! - If it is hot you can take a layer off, if it is cold you can put another layer on
Comfy shoes as you will spend a lot of time standing on your feet and need something comfy to unload in
Depending on what you are selling you might want to take a spare pair of clothes (for example if you are lifting big pieces of furniture or something which might mark your clothes)
Gloves for outdoors or for moving stock these are helpful
Hat (warm hat or sunhat depending on the weather) - obviously for if you are outside but also useful for unloading. If you turn up at 5 or 6 in the morning there is a chill in the air so a warm hat comes in handy!
Your own items - a great way to show off what you make and show what it looks like on. Wear your own creations
Wellington boots if you are going somewhere muddy such as selling at a festival
Outfit - Wear something you are comfy in but also reflects you and the style of your brand and the event you are going to. For example when I sell at vintage fairs I normally get out one of my lovely vintage dresses to wear. It is also quite useful to wear something bright coloured or memorable so people can point you and your stall out to others
Extra socks -incase they get wet
Waterproof jacket
Inner soles for your shoes - makes your feet so much more comfy!

Payment

A float with both notes and plenty of small change
Somewhere to store the money (a lockable box? a bum bag or cash belt? an apron?)
Credit card machine if you are offering this payment
Receipt/ sales book
iPad or phone if you are taking online payments

Stationary

Pins
Pens - Take something that won't smudge, won't run easily if they get wet and take lots of pens as they always seem to disappear or get lost!
Marker pen (incase you need to write signage)
Paper
Card (for makeshift signs)
Blu-Tack
Scissors
Double sided tape
Spare price tags
Clipboard
Red 'SOLD' stickers - Great if your customer is going to collect later and also encourages customers to buy as they see other people buying
Please touch/ try on sign really encourages people to touch your work, look through and try on which means they are more likely to make a purchase
Notepad - for jotting down ideas, requests, contact details etc

Display

Rail for clothing
Something to add height to your stall
Bargain/ special offer box
Jewellery stands
Price labels/ signs that stand out
Mirror for customer

Packaging

Bubble wrap
Stickers with your branding to seal
Gift wrap
Packing nuggets
Bags - these look great if they have your own branding on them
Tissue paper
Poly Pockets for protecting prints, cards etc
Small bags for little items (such as jewellery)

Refreshments

You usually won't have much time to be dashing off and leaving the stall especially if it is just you manning it so make sure you take something to eat and drink and that this is something that isn't messy but will keep your energy up. A flask of coffee or tea is a good way to perk yourself up too! Make sure you take lots of water. I often find my voice gets croaky at fairs from talking to so many people so keep hydrated!

For outdoor fairs

Flask for a hot drink
Hand warmers
Paper weights (or strong double sided tape) to stop signs blowing away
Weighted clips - These can be used to stop signs flapping or your table cloth lifting
Sunblock/ suncream
Hat and gloves

Other

Mobile phone and charger or spare battery if possible
Ipad or something you can use to tweet/ update your Facebook page etc
Camera - To take some decent photographs which you can upload to social media or your website afterwards
Spare bulbs for lighting
Mini first aid kit - Plasters are a must!
Chapstick
Tissues
Rubbish (garbage) bags
Small bin (trash can) - useful if you are gift wrapping or removing labels
Compact mirror
Hairbrush

Extras

Something to do. You hope the stall is going to be super busy all day but there will be some quieter times or times when there are customers on the stall but they are happy browsing themselves. It is a good idea to take something to do and particularly if you can take something craft related as this will double up as a way to demonstrate your craft which customers love to see. So sitting there knitting, drawing, making things will keep you busy and keep your stall looking interesting!
A friend to help out, provide an extra pair of hands and man the stall when you need to use the bathroom
Change for the car park that is easily accessible (i.e. not in float which happens to be under EVERYTHING in the car!)

Some handy hits

If you don't have a credit card machine find out where the nearest ATM is so you can direct your customers there if they need to get cash out
Find out where the toilet is so you don't have to spend ages looking for it once the fair begins and you can direct any customers who ask there too
Schedule social media posts to post where the fair is and regularly check your social media incase anyone is asking details about the fair. Upload some photographs of set up or photographs of your stall to encourage people to visit

Etsy Craft Party Video 2015 for #EtsyTeamsTV channel

Hello everyone,

At the start of the month it was Dorset Team's annual Etsy Craft Party. Each year Etsy sets a theme for the Craft Party and people across the world get together to craft and create. This year's theme was Kaleidoscope: Paper Taking Shape. The official craft for Craft Party was collaging.We found a room in a little cafe and invited the Dorset Team and other locals to come and join us for some crafting. Everyone brought with them magazines and crafting supplies to make collages with which we all shared. We had great fun making different collages and paper weavings.

The Craft Party was also a very exciting event as we were going to be filming the first ever Dorset Etsy Team video for the new Etsy Teams TV channel on Youtube which has just launched (and you should definitely check out!).The deadline was super tight to be in time for the launch of the channel but Jamie, who is a professional camera operator and editor did an amazing job in filming the event and producing the video.

Happy June! Thank you for all your support

Hooray! It is June!! I know I say this every month but it really does feel as if this year has flown by! Can't believe that we are now 6 months into the year.

This year so far has been fantastic so I am hoping the next 6 months will too! Thank you to everyone who has browsed in my shop, bought from me, messaged me on social media, and to all of you now who are reading my blog! I really appreciate your support. Last month I relaunched my Facebook page which was both exciting and nerve wracking as I had not been active on Facebook as a social media site for some time. #DorsetTeamTools - photographs of crafters tools from the Dorset Etsy Team

Hey everyone,

A while back some of you might remember I posted about the Dorset Etsy Team's latest project, #DorsetTeamTools (If you missed my original post on Dorset Team Tools you can find it by clicking here).

The Dorset Etsy Team are a group of crafters, artists, vintage and supply sellers from Dorset in England who all sell on Etsy.com. The idea behind the Dorset Team Tools project is that members from the team post photographs of the tools they use to create their handcrafted products using the hashtag #DorsetTeamTools . The hashtag is running across different social media platforms including Instagram, Twitter and Facebook. I have had great fun looking at the photographs which members have been posting. Last time I posted some photographs by some of the jewellery makers in the team (please see the link above) so today I thought I would share with you some more of my favourite photos posted to the hashtag.

I think this photograph is probably my favourite photograph which has been posted to the hashtag so far. Colleen makes beautiful hand forged ironwork. A productive May and only 5 days in!

Hello everyone!

Wow, what a busy May it has already been and we are only 5 days in! Did you all have a wonderful Bank Holiday? Hope you all had a relaxing one and got to spend it doing things you enjoy.

My bank holiday was really busy. I spent the weekend doing shop things and Monday relaxing.

I have high hopes for this month so here is what I have been up to and achieved in the first few days of May, here's hoping May is going to continue to be a great month.

Firstly I reached 1000 followers on my Pinterest page which was super exciting. Big thank you to everyone who has followed me. If you missed my post I wrote the other day about my different pinterest boards please take a look here HERE.

Secondly, super big news..... I RELAUNCHED MY FACEBOOK PAGE!

I have not run my Facebook page for a long time so am super excited to relaunch! I would love if some of you were to pop over to my Facebook page and say hello! The link is here: https://www.facebook.com/thedorothydays

Thirdly, and probably the MOST exciting news...you know the news that I couldn't tell you all yet?! Well, it was that I have been working on a whole new range of items for my shop AND working on a new way to photograph my products. I wanted to make my photographs more consistent as previous I had been using different backgrounds and trying different styles. I am super pleased with how they have come out and have also re-photographed some of the items already in my shop so that the shop looks a lot more uniform.

A glimpse inside my studio - The Dorothy Days

Hello everyone,

A few of you on Twitter have been asking about my studio and asking for some more 'behind the scenes' photographs. I thought this was a really fun idea and so when I was taking photographs the other day of products I also took some 'behind the scenes' shots so I could share them with you all and hope this gives you a little insight into how I create the products that you see in the shop.

I don't have a proper studio but instead everything you see in my shop is made in my home in the English countryside. I often take over the kitchen table, spread out all my jewellery tools and beads, stamps and tags and get making! This is also a great place for me to take photographs of my vintage items as the light is good and it is by the window.

First things first, I always start off a making or photographing session with a cup of tea! This is usually from one of my vintage tea cups (I have quite a large collection myself). My favourite tea at the moment to drink while I am making is Earl Grey

Because I sell quite a range of products (both vintage and handmade) I think it is important to me to have a motto so that my shop stays focused. I have used this motto as my shop motto for the past few years and it works well for me.

Whether it is the garden, the beaches nearby or the rolling hills of the English countryside, it all inspires my work.

When I am making new pieces for my shop I like to get everything out in front of me, play around with different colours and combinations.

Here I am trying to work out some new colour combinations for my necklaces. I am a very visual person so playing around with different things and trial and error is how I work out what works best for my jewellery. I often will string up necklaces and then take them totally apart and try something different until I find something that works!

As well as making jewellery and tags, I also sell vintage. Here are some photographs I took recently when I was getting ready to set up a shoot for vintage tea cups. A lot of work goes into checking the condition of all my tea cups and researching patterns and shapes etc.

Plans for March - How is it March already?!

Hello everyone,

How did it get to March?! I still can't get my head around it being 2015 let alone it being March! Feels like this year has already gone by super fast.

This month is shaping up to be an amazing month. I have a really packed schedule of exciting things including...

The Women of the World festival at London's Southbank Centre. I went last year and it was AMAZING so I can't wait to go again this year. There are workshops, talks, debates, a marketplace and just so much going on. I will try and take more photographs this year and hopefully will also write a blog post so watch out for that one!

I will be continuing to host a series of 'Live Chats' with the Dorset Etsy Team. We are working together as a group to improve our Etsy shops and so get together every Tuesday night online and discuss a topic for that week. It has been fantastic and I have learnt to so much.

A big family holiday to Cornwall, I can't wait. It is right by the sea and there is a slide in the house as well as stairs....thats right....a slide! Well we all know what I am going to be doing for the entire week....!!

I have been invited back to the U.K Etsy summit which this year will be held in Bristol. I can't wait to see all the other team captains who I have met before and also lots of new faces!

I will try and blog as much as possible this month and take lots of photographs for you all!

Dorset Team Christmas Fair 2014 - Wimborne Allendale Centre - 6th December

Hey everyone,

Happy Friday! Where did the whole of October go?! The Dorset Team Christmas Fair is now fast approaching and will be here before we know it. It has been months in planning so am really excited for the big day and seeing everyone's hard work come together.

Today I wanted to show you the work of David from Beneath Bright Waters. David sells fine prints inspired by the rivers which he likes to fish by. His shop is beautiful with minimalist black and white prints of the fish he encounters at the riverside. They would make a wonderful Christmas gift for a keen fisher or just someone who appreciates unique and unusual prints.

David says of his work ''My prints are the result of days spent by the river over the last few years. Sometimes alone, sometimes with friends or family. Occasionally there's a picnic, often a beer, but there's always a smile as I squint through the sunlight on the lookout for rising trout.''
